The recently-formed Affordable Housing Alternatives advocacy group has organized their first event. A tiny house showcase will be held in Sidney on Sunday, August 27 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The houses will be on display at 9800 McDonald Park Rd.
The first goal of the advocacy group is to increase public awareness of tiny houses and other alternative affordable housing options. The second goal is to work with local government to make these types of housing viable and acceptable options.
The tiny house movement is one that started over ten years ago and tiny houses continue to grow in popularity. There are several TV shows dedicated to showcasing tiny houses. A couple from North Carolina — Alexis Stephens and Christian Parsons — recently visited Victoria to promote the tiny house phenomenon. They have been travelling all over North America for the last two years filming their three-part documentary Living Tiny Legally. While in Victoria, they interviewed and filmed Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, Saanich Councillor Fred Haynes and a local tiny house owner for possible inclusion in the third episode of the series.
The Affordable Housing Alternatives advocacy group will have two houses – one finished and one in the works – on display with a possibility of adding more.
The public is invited to a free tour of the houses as well as the opportunity to meet tiny house owners and builders and get more information about the movement.
