Provincial Government Freezes Hiring, Nixes Grocery Rebate

B.C. Government Imposes Hiring Freeze Amid Economic Uncertainty

The provincial government has instituted a hiring freeze on any new public service employees, B.C.’s finance minister announced Thursday afternoon.

Brenda Bailey told reporters Thursday that the threat of tariffs on Canadian goods by U.S. President Donald Trump already put at risk thousands of jobs in all industries across the province. With that in mind, the province is going beyond the temporary pause put on external hiring for positions in early December.

Also, Bailey said that a proposed $1,000 provincial rebate on groceries — an election commitment during last year’s provincial campaign — is off the table and cancelled, also a result of the new U.S. government moves against Canada.
