On Wednesday, April 13, Phillips Brewery will be buzzing with elected officials, members of the business community, media, sponsors and team leaders to kick off the 22nd annual Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week Launch event.
Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week has grown to be one of the region’s largest bike related events and a leader organization within the community. The week-long event continues to break registration records year after year, attracting 9, 127 participants in 2015. Most notably the event has introduced over 13,800 people to commuter biking over the years, many of whom are still riding today. Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week creates the foundation to tangible emissions reductions for the city, achieving mental or physical health goals for riders and increasing productivity of employees for local business owners.
“We recognize that cycling supports our commitment to improving the health of British Columbians by encouraging active lifestyles,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Growing and improving cycling infrastructure is a major part of our government’s 10-year transportation plan – BC on the Move – and that is why we are pleased to support Bike to Work Week.”
The Launch Event held 12:15 – 12:50 pm officially marks the beginning of the registration drive for the event (May 30 – June 5, 2016). At the event participants can connect, share stories and celebrate with colleagues and friends. To build motivating excitement for Bike to Work Week, the launch unveils the 2016 t-shirt and poster, which are free to team leaders.
Since its inception in Greater Victoria in 1995, Bike to Work Week celebrations have grown throughout Canada and will include 47 other communities across British Columbia this year. With roughly 6% of people choosing a bike, Greater Victoria residents prove commuter riding is achievable, budget friendly, and provides many positive benefits to the rider and community.
